Cultural behavior is not accidental. In fact, it is often developed over hundreds of years and is the basis for undiscussed core beliefs, values, assumptions and persistent actions.

Unfortunately many of the the models which categorize world cultures weren't created with today's ultra-busy business managers in mind. While meaningful to anthropologists and social scientists, many of these models are defined in obtuse and abstract dimensions. Terms such as Power Distance, Feminine/Masculine, Polychronic, Ascription, Particularist, and Uncertainty Avoidance just don't resonate. Try one of those terms on someone who's still not convinced that "culture matters", and see what happens...

Categorizing Cultures

So, how then to explain the vast diversity of cultural differences in a way that resonates? We at Global Context went in search of such an approach – one that would be pragmatic and immediately applicable. One that's worth your time.

Well, we have good news. After interviewing renown authorities in the field, we came across an approach we believe is spot on.

The Lewis Model provides a comprehensive, business-oriented analysis of world cultures based on decades of research. It explains why people act, think, organize, decide, and communicate the way they do. Does it get any more important in business than that?
